Book Review: A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett

Dear Reader,

I am warning you that if you have chosen to read this blog, then it isn’t too late to back out and go read something else for you are about to find out that there is nothing about this blog entry that will be pleasant, it is nothing but misery, despair and discomfort and you still can go search for another blog that will be more pleasant to read.

As this blog entry is to talk about my love for all the lemony snickett book serie that I am currently eating up as if it was corn on the cob – and you all know how much I love corn on the cob – I must say even though the stories are mainly about all the misery and dire situations that befall on the three Baudelaire children, these books keep one reading and wanting to know more.

True it seems, at some point in every book, that the three Baudelaires might see a silverlining and finally have some happy times with their new guardians but soon misery and despair follow as Count Olaf always seem to find them wherever they go and always has cooked off some new scheme to get the Baudelaire fortune and always manages to slip through their and Mr. Poe’s fingers. I can also guarantee you’ll love to hate Mr. Poe’s ignorance and refusal to believe the Baudelaires that Count Olaf is back and I some new disguise everytime until he has to see concrete proofs and sometimes still refuses to believe even if he is given proofs. This is always hilarious and you just want to hate this guy and punch him and make him see. LOL

I must say, in my humble opinion, that Lemony Snickett is one of the greatest writers I have had the pleasure to read, the series of unfortunate events are well written and I especially love that he always warns the reader about the books not being a happy ever after story and says there is always time to put the book down and go read something else.

I started with The Ominous Omnibus containing the first three books of the serie namely:

The Bad Beginning - Book the First

Where all of the orphans’ misery starts as they meet Count Olaf for the first time as the children are sent to live with him after the terrible fire that killed their parents and when he learns about the Baudelaire fortune and tries to cook up his first scheme to steal the Baudelaire fortune, when he learns he cannot get it until Violet comes of age he and his acting troop concoct a horrible plan too get the children into a play called the marvelous marriage which is actually Count Olaf’s scheme to marry Violet in order to get the fortune. The plan fails in the end, as the children uncover Count Olaf’s scheme and expose it for everyone to see… but of course as the books do not have ANY happiness and perfect endings… Count Olaf flees and promises to always be back and get the Baudelaire fortune.

The Reptile Room - Book the Second

The Baudelaires are sent to live with uncle Monty who appears to be a really nice man and still his a really nice man in his tragic end. Uncle Monty is a snake collector and knows everything about snakes and has a great library which pleases Klaus - the avid reader, in fact all three Baudelaires are avid readers and they love being ain a library as they are reminded of spending so much time in their parents library before the terrible fire. Uncle Monty tells them they can help them with his work and promises them to take them on his trip where Violet can invent new traps for the snakes, Klaus can read about the country they are going and Sunny can help with biting things. So up to that point the children are quite happy, Uncle Monty tells fascinating stories, takes them to movies, etc. But as the stories never are pleasant ones, you can guess that the happiness soon transforms into misery when Uncle Monty’s new assistant quit before he even showed up and a new assistant shows up in his place Stefano – Count Olaf in disguise yet again – Of course the children recognize Count Olaf right away but have a hard time making grown ups believe them until they have to come up with proofs after proofs. Count Olaf kills Uncle Monty and makes it look like snakebite in order to take the children on the trip himself and try to get at the Baudelaire fortune yet again. Fortunately (not very fortunate but still – his plans are uncovered and exposed, but as always Count Olaf flees and promises to find the children and get at the fortune one more time.

The Wide Window - Book the Third

The story begins when the children are sent to live with another distant relatives, surprisingly they have never heard of any of them, Aunt Josephine who is afraid of everything from the stove bursting into flames, to the doorknobs shattering into millions of pieces, to realtors, etc. And who has one great love: grammar and again a nice library which make the children quite happy, in this case all the books are about grammar not reptiles, but still it is a library and the children love libraries and books. Again despite all of Aunt Josephine’s fears and eating cold meals because she is terrified of turning on the stove to cook, the Baudelaires love Aunt Josephine and finally thinks they could be happy, yet again as they always think in the beginning… But soon enough Captian Sham – Count Olaf in disguise with a brand new scheme to get the fortune – shows up and Aunt Josephine falls head over heals for him… of course the children yet again recognize Count Olaf and as usual it is extremely hard to get the grown ups to believe them until another unfortunate accident happens where Aunt Josephine is killed by the Lachrymose Leeches. They tell the grown ups and Mr. Poe and of course he doesn’t believe them without sufficient proofs that Captain Sham is indeed Count Olaf in disguise yet again, so they decide to solve the mystery themselves. The children find a note with lots of spelling mistakes by the way something unusual for a person who loves grammar so much, where Aunt Josephine supposedly killed herself and left the children in Captain Sham’s care, the children soon figure out the hidden message from all the spelling mistakes telling them that Aunt Josephine was alive and hiding in Cudle Cave. They soon get in a boat, one of captain sham’s boats, and set sail to go save and bring Aunt Josephine back to avoid being in Captian Sham’s clutches. As they try to come back, they get attacked by the Lachrymose leeches because aunt Josephine ate a banana and as you should all know one shouldn’t eat and go swimming or sailing without waiting an hour after you ate as the leeches can smell food on you. They come up with a plan or an invention – Violet’s invention – to attract attention of some one to help, they do unfortunately for them they attract Captain Sham’s attention – Count Olaf – and he throws Aunt Josephine in the lake with the leeches and brings the children to shore where Mr. Poe is and tries to prove to him that he cares for the children as he has just saved them but again his plan are uncovered and exposed and yet again Count Olaf flees promising to find the children yet again and get the Baudelaire fortune.

The Miserable Mill - Book the Fourth

The Children are sent to live with another distant relative that unfortunately I cannot tell you his name as no one really knows, he prefers to be known as Sir. When they arrive they find a note that says they ought to work in the Lucky Smells Lumber Mill... imagine children doing hard Lumber Mill labour. Already they know that Sir isn't the nicest, apparently he has promise to get them working in the lumber mill in exchange to make sure they are safe and Count Olaf won't find them, little did he know Count Olaf is very sneaky and ALWAYS find a way. They still meet some nice people and learn valuable skills and find a library with only three books in it which turn out very useful indeed. When they first arrive they see this building in the shape of an eye - or Count Olaf's tatoo - which I am sure you can guess that wasn't giving any of them a very good feeling. Sir's assistant actually is very nice and tries to help the children though he is scared of Sir, has everyone else at lucky smell lumber mill are as well, so all he can do is sneak them some food so they don't only have to have gum for lunch. To sum up the story, Klaus gets tripped by the horrible foreman - who turns out ot be one of Count Olaf's assistants - and is sent to Dr. Orwell the only doctor in town who also turns out to be Count Olaf's assistant... the Baudelaire sisters finally find out that Klaus was hypnotised by reading one of the book in the library - Dr.Orwell's book the real Dr. Orwell - and causes an accident because he is under hypnosis and shouldn't have been operating such a machine being so young... when the foreman realizes that Klaus isn't hypnotised anymore, he trips him again and causes his glasses to breaks yet again and has to send him back to Dr. Orwell... to get hypnotise again, this time the sisters go along with him to find out what is going on at the Doctor's office not wanting to leave their brother alone. Later on they find out how to unhypnotize Klaus, finding out the word to use to pull him out of the control of the foreman and find out Count Olaf's plan when Sir tells them if there are anymore accidents he will send them to live with Shirley the nice receptionist at Dr. Orwell's office - who you might guess is Count Olaf in disguise - And his scheme was to get the children to cause accidents to become the Baudelaire's guardian and get a hold of the fortune... Again as they tell the grown ups they refuse to believe them without so many proofs but manage to solve the mystery and get the grown ups to realize, but of course Count Olaf yet again disappears promising to fin them one more time and get the fortune with another one of his schemes.

The Austere Academy - Book the Fifth

The Baudelaire children are sent to boarding school practically because Mr. Poe is tired of always having to find them a new guardian as a reason of all the unfortunate events that always befall on the children but when they arrive and take a look at the Prufrock Preporatory School building and and mostly the Motto of the school "memento mori" which means "remember you will die" they find it odd that a school would have this as a motto and soon find out that they are bound to yet again have misery, despair befall on them. First they find out since they do not have a guardian they have to live in the orphans' shack, a very horrible place to live full of little crabs, fungus on the ceiling and horrible colours on the walls and horrible coach genghis - Count Olaf in disguse yet again - making the three Baudelaires run laps until morning to get them too tired to study and do their school work or for sunny her administrative duties - horrible of Vice Principal Nero to get a baby do secreterial duties while she should be in preschool - having to attend the most aweful violin recital of someone who cannot play the violin and that horrible Carmelita spats teasing the children. Fortunately they did meet the Quagmires, those triplets who are actually two since their brother perished in a fire, the Baudelaires like them because they have a similar story and are orphans two and had to live in the orphans's shack... the quagmires help the Baudelaires uncover Count Olaf's plans but get kidnapped as Count Olaf escapes and disappears yet again which leaves the Baudelaires worrying about their friends.

The Ersatz Elevator - Book the Sixth

The Baudelaires new guardians are the Squalors who live in this penthouse a top of 48 or 84 apartment complex. They like their guardians more Jerome than Esmé in the end and as the story advances as they find out she only cares for IN things and cares for the Baudelaires only because orphans are IN. As their new life appears to be better, the Baudelaires are still worried about their friends kidnapped previously by Count Olaf, the Quagmire triplets and trying to figure out where Olaf has taken them little do they find out they are as Count Olaf and his horrible assistants are right under their noses the whole time... in disguises yet again and with another horrible scheme to steal the Baudelaire fortune...the children soon find out what Ersatz things are... things that appear to be true but in fact are fake. I can say personally I see a lot of things and people who are fake in this world and I despise that very very much. The Baudelaire soon find that the elevator, the ersatz elavator is in fact just a elevator shaft and Gunther the IN auctioneer's - which i am sorry to say is Count Olaf in disguise - hiding place and where he has hidden the Quagmires... The Baudelaires find their friends but when they return withViolet's invention to rescue them, they soon find out they are too late and Gunther has already taken them away. They tell Esmé and are curious to see she actually listens to them about Gunther really being Count Olaf and soon find out the terrible thing that Esmé in in cohoots with Olaf when she pushes them into the elevator shaft pretending she was going to help them uncover Olaf's terrible scheme. As they fell and soon realize they would surely die... a net was set in place to break their fall to keep them there for after the auction when count olaf return to get the orphans and whisk them away... but the Baudelaires being very resourceful and inventive and due to Sunny's teeth they get out of of the shaft, thinking they should climb up but instead climb down and discover a secret passageway out leading them to the Baudelaire mansion ruins... remains a mystery that they still have to uncover... They get to veblen hall, to the auction and thinking they have figured out olaf's plans and which item contains the quagmires get jerome to bid on it so they can open the box V.F.D. and expose Count Olaf but this was a set up to fool everyone and the quagmires where in another previous item. They succeed in exposing Olaf's scheme but I am afraid to say that yet again he fled and disappeared promising to be back with another scheme and get the Baudelaire fortune and now he yet again escaped with the Quagmires, the Baudelaires' friends.

The Vile Village - Book the seventh

Following the statement it takes a village to raise a child and due to every single one of the Baudelaire relatives beign too afraid of the horrible misery that befall wherever the children making them refusing to be their guardians... the children have to chose a village part of the government program "it takes a village to raise a child" to live. They check the long list as Mr. Poe is letting them choose the village they want to live in and after dismissing several and Mr. Poe dismissing one because he didn't like the bank they see one with the letters V.F.D. and they aer sure they will uncover the mystery that the quagmire triplets tried to let them know about... I am sorry to say it isn't the case and that this book will not end in a pleasant manner at all, not for the Baudelaires. Though they come very close.
Mister Poe puts them on a bus and tells them to report to V.F.D. Town Hall where they find out that the residents aren't too keen to have the children live in their home even though they participate in the government program and the elders council decides they will live with Hector the handyman and do the chores for the town day and night. They soon find out from Hector who is way too skittish to speak up at town meetings all about the stupid rules V.F.D. has and that he isn't at all too fond of them. They come to like Hector amidst his over skittyishness about everything, when he tells the children about his secret inventing studio and secret library which turn aout quite useful to the children has the story advances. They get mysterious messages - poem couplets - from Isadora quagmires telling them that they were right and their friends are indeed in V.F.D. Violet helps Hector fix his hot air mobile home and they all plan to save the quagmires, expose detective dupin and luciana's scheme - respectively Count Olaf and Esmé squalor a previous guardian in disguise - to yet again steal the Baudelaire fortune... they are sent to jail before they are supposed to be burned at the stake for breaking V.F.D.' s stupid rules and they are stupid as they contradict one another. They managed to escape due to violet's inventing skills and find the quagmires due to Klaus' reading and deductive skills and without mentioning Isadora's couplets, they get the triplets out of the fountain but all five of them are now chased by the townspeople who are set to burn them at the stakes They see Hector in his hot air mobile home and finally speaks up and stops being so skittish tries to help the children to safety and get them to climb in the balloon, the quagmires managed but unfortunately the Baudelaires fall from the ladder of the balloon when luciana - Esmé - sends a harpoon and the ladder breaks, the quagmires throw their notebooks so that the Baudelaires could at least elude the mysteries of the real V.F.D., the murder of Jacques Snickett - whom the townspeople thought was count olaf has he had the tattoo and one eyebrow - Which should tell you how terrible it is to jump to too many conclusions. wondering whether they'll ever see the quagmires ever again, find out what jacques was trying to tell them about their parents before being murdered.

But the books get destroyed by another harpoon, leaving the Baudelaires with only a couple torn pages which you can be sure they will study and try and elucidate the mysteries. Of course the townspeople still want to burn them at the stakes after they get one of their precious crows to a vet and safety... the children decide to run and take care of themselves as having someone else to care for them only brings misery and despair and leaving them caring for themselves anyways. I am saddened to have to tell youthat Mr. Poe doesn't show up in the end to finally realize that count olaf was indeed in disguise yet again trying to steal the Baudelaire fortune and try to catch him not being very good at it.

So now the children are left on their own to find a place to live until Violet comes of age and can access the Baudelaire fortune and to solve all those mysteries, protect themselves from Count Olaf's evil schemes and who knows what else, more misery and despair.

I warned you if you want to stop reading this entry and go find a more pleasurable one or something else to read that isn't filled with misery and despair and so many unfortunate events, it is always time.

The review of the rest of the 13 books will come soon.
